‘How to’ Guides
Welcome to the Lampeter and District Beekeepers’ education pages.
Our aim is to raise awareness and understanding of the honey bee, promote good husbandry techniques and improve the environment in which the honey bee exists.
We run beekeeping events / courses at various times of the year aimed at a range of experience levels from complete beginners to the more experienced beekeepers.
In addition to the beekeeping theory, we offer practical beekeeping sessions throughout the active season. We also have a program of talks and presentations throughout the winter months at our monthly meetings.
Use the menu above to explore more and come back to check regularly to keep up to date.
Enjoy beekeeping!
What is the best way to start keeping Bees ?
The best way to get involved with bees and beekeeping is through your local beekeepers’ association. You can find out about bees, get to wear the suits and even handle some bees before you take the plunge, spend money on hives and equipment and set up your own colony. You can find out if beekeeping really is for you and what’s really involved and you’ll get invaluable support and advice from other members.
Our Taster Day course is designed for people who are not sure if they are ready to commit just yet to a full beekeeping course or who are just curious to know more. Alternatively, if you live in the Lampeter area, you may be interested in attending our next Beginners’ Course.
You will find details of beekeepers’ associations in other areas of Wales via the Welsh Beekeepers Association http://www.wbka.com and in England via the British Beekeepers’ Association http://www.bbka.org.uk
What do I do if I have found a swarm?
Think you have a swarm?
Before contacting us:
Step 1:
Confirm that you have a honey bee swarm and not other insects such as bumblebees or wasps. Swarms come in all shapes and sizes. See our swarm help pages for illustrations.
Step 2:
If you are in the Lampeter area, please contact our Swarm Coordinator, on 07458 300091. She will organise for one of our swarm catchers in your area to come and deal with the swarm. Please be aware that not all swarms will be readily accessible and action can only be taken when a suitable on-site risk assessment has been carried out.
Step 3:
If you are in the Aberystwyth Area please contact the Aberystwyth Beekeepers’ Association on 01970 832359.
If you are in the Cardigan area, please contact the Teifiside Beekeepers’ Association on 01545 590515.
For other areas of Wales, you will find details of beekeepers’ associations here.
If you don’t think they are honeybees, click here for a more guidance from the BBKA to help you identify the insects.
Alternatively, in an emergency, or for help in dealing with a wasp nest, you can contact your local authority’s Environmental Health department and ask for pest control.
